Office 365 Recommended Operating Systems and Software
For an optimal user experience within Office 365, the following operating systems and software are suggested:
- Windows 7
- Office 2010 or Office Professional Plus[1]
- Internet Explorer 8
- Lync 2010 (included in Office 365 Plan P1)
- Office desktop set up (an installable piece of software included in Office 365 Plan P1)
Office 365 – Operating Systems and Software Not Supported
These following operating systems and software versions are not supported when using Office 365:
- Windows Server® 2003
- Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
- Microsoft Office Communicator 2007
Rather than using these operating systems and software, we highly suggest that you upgrade to the versions listed in the Recommended Operating Systems and Software section.
How to use Office 365 on Desktop Applications
For an optimal experience with Office 365, a set of necessary components and updates must be applied to each computer. To ease the installation and maintenance of these components and updates, MS gives an installable piece of software (“Office desktop set up”) at no additional charge. These updates are necessary for each workstation that uses rich clients (such as Microsoft Office 2010) and connects to the MS Online Services.
Office desktop set up offers several key benefits:
- Prepares PCs to connect to Office 365 by applying required updates
- Sets up Outlook and Microsoft Lync™ for usage with Office 365
A list of these update requirements will be published for companies that want to use an alternative method of deploying the updates.
